I will not be ashamed to admit that I like Ben Folds. In fact, I think he's great. If you've never experienced the key-smashing white-boy riot that is a Ben Folds concert, you really should. I personally think he's a great lyricist and like his somewhat tongue in cheek vibe. Plus, I adore pianists. I'm in love with people who play the piano. And Benny has been with me well into my teens, so there is a bond there that should not be broken.
But.
I have decided that I hate Ben Folds fans. These reasons include, but are not limited to:
1. They are frumpy. Looking around at the gig, I thought, turn off the melancholy tunes of Evaporated and Brick and get something upbeat into you. And go for a run.
2. They need to comb their hair. At least three people in front of me had massive unruly frizzy curls in afro-style (men and women included).
Note forever:
IF YOU HAVE BIG HAIR AND YOU SIT IN FRONT OF ME AT GIGS, I HATE YOU.
Comb your fricken hair. Sit at the back. Wear a hat. Use a hair tie. Cut it off. CUT IT OFF!
3. Ben Folds fans think they are cool when they swear. Or when Ben swears. About 20 annoying fans of his turn up to every single gig and every gig they call out for the same songs:
Rock This Bitch Bitches Ain't Shit Rockin the Suburbs (when they get to use the F-word)
Ooooh. I said F. I said Shit. I said Bitch. I'm so hardcore. NO. This is not a hip-hop concert. This is not a hardcore heavy metal concert. This is a BEN FOLDS concert.
If you listen to the link for 'rock this bitch' you will hear said fans calling out for said song.
In fact, Mr Folds gets so sick of people calling out for Rock this Bitch that last night he wrote a song called "I've been rockin this bitch" which is about he rocks this bitch everywhere all over the world, so would you please shut up so he can play a good song already.
And the most annoying thing is that Ben Folds is really good to his fans. He'll always line up a good support act and usually include a surprise guest. When I saw him play with the Melb Symphony Orchestra he suddenly said "oh yes, here are the Dresdin Dolls" and out they came. Last night he pulled out Missy Higgins and they did some cool pianoy drummy duet. And he does cool stuff like write songs with Nick Hornby, play with orchestras and create cds of he music using university a cappella bands. He's good to his annoying, heckling, swearing fan base.
okay. that's my rant.
wait, actually one more thing. You know you can tell when someone is not a real fan when they get out their camera to video two songs only: Brick and Rockin the Suburbs. At least listen to one album the whole way through.
in summary: cut your hair. you're not cool. and learn to play the piano.
